Charleston Restaurants and Bars |

You will
always find great food at our local Charleston area restaurants. The
Charleston area has the most five star restaurants per capita in the United
States. As you can imagine, this makes the restaurant business very competitive
for those dining dollars. The Charleston
dining atmosphere is very much similar to a city like New Orleans, Louisiana.
You will find the better Charleston restaurants serving French-Creole
classics.
You will be sure to agree with me Charleston is a wonderful city with great
restaurants. Now, I
am going to share
with you my completely unbiased restaurant opinions and menu favorites.
I hope you will find this information useful and try a few of my suggestions. I must admit that I always find myself having to
make plenty of decisions when it comes to ordering. This is because of the ever
changing fresh catch of the day specials and wonderful desert selections. |

The
Boathouse- The Boathouse special will always feature a
fresh catch
of the day. I generally order mine grilled with collard greens and blue
cheese Cole slaw. I know that sounds weird and you are probably thinking that blue cheese
Cole slaw is a typo. Well it is not and you should order it because blue cheese Cole slaw
is simply delicious!
The Boathouse serves their fried selections nicely in a light batter unlike
many other seafood restaurants. So, go ahead and order the captain's platter
fried.
You will not be disappointed. The deserts here are just ok. Go
for the appetizers instead.

SNOB-
Chef Frank
Lee a native of South Carolina will provide you with great Southern cooking with a
little French twist. Wednesday night’s special is a deviled crab stuffed
with
flounder, topped with fried shrimp, shiitake mushroom butter, snow peas and
mashed sweet potatoes. Wow! This is a fantastic dinner. The kitchen is
open and inviting to its dinners. Here you can watch the care taken to
prepare each dinner. This dining
experience is truly
unique. Ask for bread with the drink order because the food
preparation scents will
not allow you to wait any longer for food.

High Cotton-
Sunday
brunch is a social event here for many Charlestionians and you will find
plenty of places throughout the lowcountry serving brunch. This is one of my Sunday brunch favorites. Here you will enjoy the sounds of live jazz music while enjoying the savory
taste of jumbo lump crab crepe and bloody Mary's.

Hank’s-
This is the location of Charlestonian’s old favorite for many years
Henry’s. Hank’s is a restaurant where it is alright to get
completely stuffed. For starters, try the Charleston She crab soup. For
your appetizer, try the Oyster casino. For the main entrée, you will enjoy
Hank’s seared scallops with Portobello mushroom vinaigrette with truffle
oil, wilted spinach and mashed potatoes. For dessert, you need to try the
banana cream pie.

Rue De Jean-
This is
great place for lunch or just a cheese plate and wine selection served on the outside patio. The
French onion soup is perfect to the palate during a cool fall day. This is a great place to
relax and unwind from your morning out shopping.

FIG-
This is also another great place for lunch. The spring vegetable soup
or
baked goat cheese salad appetizers are perfect for your afternoon
dining experience. Chef Michael Lata prefers locally grown organic foods to use
for preparing his dishes. If you choose not to order something light and
end up selecting a main entree, then order the baked wahoo which is
an excellent choice.

Hurricanes-
This is a great late night restaurant which has
great food and an active bar scene. The atmosphere is fun and trendy.
Most nights throughout the week you will also find live music.

The Trio Club-
Thursday night is Salsa night. The Latin band,
Para-Ti, is worth the venture out. There is an outdoor patio to escape
the night club's smoke or if the noise gets to loud.

Zinc's Bistro and Bar-The
outside patio that overlooks the Charleston Harbor makes for magnificent
sunset views and great happy hours. This is a perfect place to get
your
night started. The atmosphere is fun and the different kinds of dining options
gives you plenty of choices. You can sit at the raw bar, sushi bar,
outside patio tables or inside for formal dining. Zinc’s has the largest wine
selection of any Mt. Pleasant restaurant or bar.

Slightly Up The Creek-
The owners of Slightly North of Broad (SNOB) in
downtown Charleston brings us Slightly Up The Creek which is located right on spectacular Shem
Creek. This restaurant will not disappoint.

RB’s- This
is a restaurant located right on Shem Creek with good food and great patio
dining. Here you will find the patio dining to be the best along Shem Creek.

Shem Creek Bar and Grill-
This is a great place for lunch. You can enjoy appetizers and drinks
inside or outside at the bar. Here you might feel
adventurous and try one of their
oyster bloody Mary's or oyster shooters.

Water’s Edge-
This is another great Shem Creek restaurant
but a little pricier than the
rest
because of its formal dining atmosphere. The shrimp and stone ground
grits are really good here!

T-Bonze-
If by chance you get
tired of seafood, you will want to visit T-Bonze for a great steak.
The rib eye steak and loaded baked potato along with a few home brewed
lager lights
is a great meal. You will also need to order desert here. The
coconut cream pie is my favorite and is really out of this world!

Meals Twelve Dollars
and Under |

Los Arcos-
If you want
original Mexican food, you will want to go to Los Arcos. Here you can
eat as many baskets of chips and home made salsa as you like. The Texas-Fajitas,
Carnitas, Mexican Quisidia and Chicken Arozcon Con Polo are very good choices
here.

Wild Wings-
This is the
best place in the area for the chicken wing lover. My favorite wing selection is
Texas hot. The extra hot wing sauce is not for the meek and timid. You
need to really like spicy buffalo
chicken wing sauce before you go and order "extra hot". Thursday
night
is two dollar vodka night which always brings out a lively crowd.

Arts-
This is a
local hang out which features live music on the weekends. Art's is a
great place to have fun if you are a smoker or if you don't mind the smell
of second hand
smoke. You will not find a non-smoking section here.

Melvin's- This is by far the
best Bar-B-Que place in Charleston. You will not be disappointed with
the Bar-B-Que at
Melvin's. Melvin's secret recipe comes from the backwoods of Holly
Hill, South Carolina. This is really finger licking good Bar-B-Que!

The Boathouse-
This
restaurant is the same as the downtown Charleston Boathouse restaurant except that the
Isle of Palms Boathouse restaurant has spectacular views which overlook the Intracoastal Waterway.
Here you will find indoor and outdoor dining. There is also a
roof bar serving great cocktails and sunset views that overlook both the Intracoastal
Waterway and Atlantic Ocean.

Banana Cabana-
This is a great flip-flop
and swim suite kind of
place located right along the beach front.
I would recommend eating lunch here and not dinner. The mahi-mahi
sandwich or
chicken sandwich with French fries and Cole slaw are your best choices
here.
Top of Page |

Windjammer-
This is
where you find the best Isle of Palms night life which includes live music on
the weekends. You will also find the best competitive beach volley ball
games being played right outside. You can grab a cold beer, watch the
beach volley ball action, and catch a few rays all from the deck overlooking the
beach volley ball
courts and the Atlantic Ocean.

Dunleavy’s Pub-
This is a great place for lunch or early
dinner. You get free popcorn while you wait on your food to arrive.
The popcorn real taste great with cold draft beer.
The walls are covered with state license plates and stickers. The foot long hot dog
and draft beer tastes real good to me on a hot summer day.

Bert’s Bar and Grill-
Bert's is a
local favorite hang out. You will
find live music being played here on the weekends. You will need to remember that Bert's stops serving food
at 4:00 p.m. and they will make no exceptions. The food here is served
on Sullivan's finest plastic ware. I always order the fresh catch of the day. Bert's
table service consists of your going up to the bar and ordering. In
other words, there is no service just good food.
